After 5 years being closed and in storage, the museum is looking at Memorial Arena in Cobourg as their new home.
Cobourg Council received an update regarding the Canadian Fire Fighter Museum this week and the work required to bring the aging facility up to date for use. It will involve work on electrical, heating, plumbing and A/C renovations as well as accessibility considerations for the entire building.
President Michelle Haney-Kileeg told us where things stand with the ongoing work.
Originally opened in 1984, The Canadian Fire Fighters boasts a wonderful collection of artifacts that tell the story of how firefighters role in our communities.
Council approved the use of Memorial Arena for the next year to allow the Museum to get plans and estimates together for renovations to the aging building.
Haney-Kileeg tells us it comes with an added bonus.
Since 1984, the Canadian Fire Fighters Museum has been the national centre for documentation, preservation, education, and celebration of Canadian firefighting heritage and safety awareness.
Michelle believes they may be welcoming visitors before 2025.
Michelle says they’ve got the best exhibit in Canada and is excited to be able to share all of the artifacts, including more than a dozen trucks, with the public again.
The Canadian Fire Fighters Museum is a volunteer-run organization and could use your help. If you would like to get involved, you can do so by making a cash donation or by joining as a family or individual member.
Funds are needed to maintain and expand their collections and get the doors open again. Donations will help develop displays, upgrade facilities, maintain apparatus, and promote various activities and events.
