During Hooray for Coaches Day, we’d like to introduce you to John Partlow.
John is a minor baseball coach who we spoke to as part of our Hooray for Coaches Day.
The lifelong baseball player says he grew a knack for helping out a friend of his get to-and-from different games in his early twenties. Shortly after, he began teaching French– To which he found a shocking difference to youth’s approach to learning in lessons versus sports.
Partlow describes the discrepancy by saying teaching is “please do what I’m asking you to do” compared to coaching’s “How can we help you reach your ceiling?”
He elaborates further by saying he’s noticed students in sports are much more driven when pushed by their own merits as opposed to lesson planning in class.
Partlow says he enjoys watching the kids in minor baseball begin to click with the game and begin a cycle of growth from thereon. Partlow presented a quote to tie together why he coaches:
“What’s something I can do that needs doing that if I don’t do it, it may not get done? It checks all the boxes. I’ve been around baseball my whole life. Somebody’s got to do it.” Partlow says, “It’s their process to own and they’re owning it.”
