On November 12th, Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church officially turns 175 years old and they are hosting a very special guest, the Moderator of the United Church of Canada, the Right Reverend Doctor Carmen Lansdowne.
This event on November 12th, 2023 will wind up Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church’s social media campaign, 175 days for 175 years, which started on May 21st and has daily shared the history of the church located on Prince Edward Street in Brighton and the impact of its congregation.
The Right Reverend Doctor Carmen Lansdowne, Moderator of the United Church of Canada, will be their very distinguished guest at their official 175th anniversary service on Sunday, November 12th, at 10:30 am.
The United Church of Canada elected the Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, Kwisa’lakw as its 44th Moderator. She will be the church’s spiritual leader for the next three years.
Ordained in 2007, the Rev. Dr. Lansdowne is only the second Indigenous person to be elected Moderator, following the Very Rev. Stan McKay, who served as Moderator 1992‒1994. A member of the Heiltsuk First Nation, she was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia, and has been a lifelong member of the United Church. She is committed to an Indigenous way of being in the world.
She holds a PhD from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. In addition to her theological contributions as a writer and speaker, she has served the church in a variety of roles locally, nationally, and with the World Council of Churches. As Moderator, she will be on leave from her position as Executive Director of First United Church Community Ministry Society, which serves the people of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
All are welcome to hear her speak on November 12th, 2013 at 10:30 am. There will be coffee, tea and desserts offered afterwards in the community hall.
