Inspiring the Romantic poets, with his most memorable pieces that include: “Auld Lang Syne”, “To a Mouse”, “Tam O’Shanter” and the “Battle of Sherramuir”. Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns (affectionately known as Rabbie, Robbie or Bobbie), was born on January 25th, 1759 and died July 21st, 1796. It is said that nine of Burn’s closest friends gathered to mark the 5th anniversary of his passing by gathering on his birthday for the traditional Scottish meal of Haggis, toasts with scotch whiskey and the reciting of his poems, and this celebration of life caught on and spread across Commonwealth.
Brighton Legion’s Kathie Woodcox told us their annual Robbie Burns Dinner is the BIG event in January.
The Legion is organizing its annual Robbie Burns Day celebration on Saturday, January 27th, 2024. There will be a haggis and a Scottish themed dinner with a dance to follow, highlighting the Pipe band and Scottish dancers. Tickets are $30 each, doors open at 6:00 pm.
Woodcox told us that tickets are limited to 100, and as this event is a favourite, it will sells out quickly.
Tickets go on sale on January 2nd, 2024 and to purchase them you must visit the Legion, located on Park Street, Monday to Saturday, afternoons or evenings.
Woodcox told us you don’t need to worry about their being enough haggis to go round.
