Elena De Luca and Nate Bennett, Grade 12 students at East Northumberland Secondary School (ENSS) recently completed a science project that won first place in the Senior Earth and Environmental Sciences division and third place overall at the Peterborough Regional Science Fair in April, and a third place first at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Edmonton.
These two students are members of ENSS’s Environmental Club and over the past two years they have been studying the school wide recycling program.
“They have been doing interviews with school officials and employees at Waste Connections,” said Anne Falla – Teacher at ENSS. “They even tracked the path of waste, and are using their findings to make changes to the school boards recycling program.”
Elena and Nate have been making presentations at local school to continue to educate on recycling and recently presented their project’s finding to the Brighton Rotary Club.
The Brighton Rotary Club has seven areas of service and their newest focus is supporting environmental issues.
President Joyce Cassin presented Elena and Nate of the ENSS Environmental Club with a cheque for $500 to support the club in their on-going efforts. Cassin shared her thoughts after the fact.
The ENSS Environmental Club is a group committed to fighting climate change and has a membership of over 30 students who meet weekly.
