The Friends of Presqu’ile Park in Brighton are gearing up for the return of the popular Waterfowl Weekend spectacle this March.
Set to return the weekend of March 16 and 17, residents, birders and visitors can join the friends, park staff and volunteers as waterfowl spanning more than 20 species arrive in Presqu’ile Bay for spring and to rest and feed before moving onto nesting areas.
“This gives birders a great opportunity to see and appreciate a wide range of waterfowl species,” say the Friends of Presqu’ile Park. “Those new to birding, as well as experienced birders eager to expand their knowledge, can learn more from naturalist-led viewings.”
Volunteer naturalists will be set up with telescopes to help visitors to get a closer look, too.
The Lighthouse Interpretive Centre will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with displays and volunteers also on hand, note the friends. And there will be duck-themed displays and kid’s activities – so the friends are encouraging folks to bring families.
The Friends of Presqu’ile Gift Shop will be open. Brightonians can also join the friends for a fundraising barbecue lunch both days 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A detailed schedule of events and demonstrations will be posted on social media and around the park.
The friends’ website also has a calendar of events and more details via www.friendsofpresquile.on.ca.
The Friends of Presqu’ile Park is described as a charitable organization devoted to preserving and protecting the natural heritage of Presqu’ile Provincial Park. The friends work to enhance the educational opportunities for park visitors, to provide volunteer assistance for park activities and funding for selected educational and environmental projects.
