Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Northumberland and Quinte areas.
In an update Friday morning, Environment Canada issued another alert, saying snowfall amounts of near 15 centimetres are now anticipated.
The alert is in effect for the Northumberland, Quinte and Belleville areas. This follows a special weather statement for the areas that was issued Thursday and predicted significant snowfall but not as much originally.
In the Friday update, Environment Canada echoed significant snowfall is anticipated Friday during the day and through the night, and that peak snowfall rates of two centimetres per hour are possible.
In the heavier snow, visibility may be suddenly reduced at times.
Light snow is expected to start this morning but should intensify late in the afternoon or evening, said Environment Canada.
“The snow will taper off from west to east late tonight. This snow may have a significant impact on the evening commute in urban areas.”
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow, added officials, who are encouraging motorists to be prepared to adjust their driving with changing road conditions.
On Thursday, officials were predicting about five to 10 centimetres, but warned additional winter weather travel advisories or snowfall warnings may be issued for some areas as the weather event draws nearer.
The weather event is supposed to end early Saturday morning.
