With warm weather on the way, the HKPR District Health Unit urges vigilance against ticks and Lyme disease.
These critters, particularly blacklegged ticks, lurk in wooded areas and tall grasses year-round.
Hitching rides on unsuspecting hosts, they pose a risk of transmitting Lyme disease bacteria through their bites.
Stay protected by wearing light-colored clothing, using insect repellent, and thoroughly checking for ticks after outdoor adventures.
“Enjoying outdoor activities is essential for physical and mental health,” emphasizes Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environmental Health with the HKPR District Health Unit. “However, it’s crucial to remain vigilant against tick bites, especially considering the potential risk of Lyme disease. Taking proactive measures like wearing appropriate clothing and using insect repellent ensures we can embrace nature safely.”
If you suspect a tick bite or notice symptoms of Lyme disease, such as fever or fatigue, seek medical attention immediately.
Stay proactive and enjoy nature safely with these preventive measures.
