Northumberland OPP say a Brighton resident has been charged as police continue to investigate a serious single-vehicle crash that shut down a portion of County Road 2 in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand until the early morning hours Monday.
On Sunday, April 14, 2024, at about 6:10 p.m., police said they responded to a single-vehicle collision where a passenger vehicle left the road on County Road 2. The road was subsequently closed between Townline Road and Herron Road.
Northumberland Paramedics and the fire department also responded to the scene.
Initially, police described the crash as “serious” and confirmed a road closure was necessary to enable an investigation. Members of the traffic collision investigation (TCI) team were also called in to help with the probe into the circumstances of the crash, explained police.
The roadway reopened around 2:45 a.m. Monday.
On Monday afternoon, police confirmed one of the passengers involved in the collision suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted from the scene by Ornge Air Ambulance to a Toronto hospital for emergency medical treatment. Two passengers were also transported by ambulance to a local hospital where one was further transported to a Toronto hospital for what can be described as non-life-threatening injuries, reported OPP.
The remaining passenger at a local hospital has what can be described as minor injuries, added police.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 46-year-old from Brighton was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs.
This charge has not been proven in court.
The accused was also issued a further 90-day administrative driver licence suspension and the vehicle impounded for seven days, said police.
The name of the accused will not be released, said police.
The OPP is continuing to remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive. Police continue to ask citizens who observe suspected impaired drivers to call 911 or OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
