Northumberland OPP have laid a slew of charges since last Friday.
In a release issued Wednesday, May 22, police said the Victoria Day long-weekend marked a busy couple days for police. In recent days, spanning several separate investigations, police say they’ve more than a dozen charges, including for assault, sexual assault, impaired driving, and more.
The following is a rundown of the separate calls/investigations leading up to Tuesday:
On Friday, May 17, at about 3:50 p.m., OPP said they responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence near Castleton. Shortly after police arrived, a 15-year-old was arrested and charged with assault and mischief – destroys or damages property.
The individual cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
In another call last Friday at about 10 p.m., officers said they were at a location in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand regarding a prior incident, when a motorist approached catching police’s attention.
After an impaired operation investigation and approved screening device demand (ASD) was made, the driver was arrested and transported to a local detachment for further testing. As a result of the investigation, a 44-year-old Alnwick/Haldimand resident was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), reported OPP.
On Saturday, May 18, shortly before noon, police said Northumberland OPP’s crime unit arrested a Quinte West resident as a result of a sexual assault compliant received on Dec. 4, 2023.
The alleged historical incident is reported to have occurred between 1980 and 1986, said police.
Following over a five-month investigation, police said a 66-year-old male was charged with sexual intercourse with a female under 14 years of age, and sexual intercourse with a stepdaughter or female employee.
The name of the accused won’t be released to protect the identity of the victim, added police.
In another call last Saturday, shortly before 8 p.m., police said they responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision in Trent Hills. Police said they arrived and observed a motorcycle in the ditch.
Officers spoke with the motorcyclist who was uninjured at the time.
As a result of an investigation, a 62-year-old Hastings resident was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), operation while prohibited, and fail to surrender insurance card.
On Sunday, May 19, the crime unit also arrested a person from the Municipality of Brighton as a result of a sexual assault complaint, which was reported to police on April 23, 2024, said OPP.
As a result of the investigation, a 23-year-old male was charged with sexual assault.
The name of the accused won’t be released to protect the identity of the victim.
On Monday, May 20, shortly before noon, OPP said they were on patrol and stopped a passenger vehicle on Division Street in Cobourg. After speaking with the driver, an ASD demand was made, reported police.
As a result, the individual was arrested and transported to a local detachment for further testing, said OPP.
A 50-year-old Cobourg resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, and failure or refusal to comply with demand.
On Tuesday, May 21, at about 11:15 p.m., police said they were dispatched to a traffic complaint regarding a driver on County Road 2 in Brighton.
Officers said they located the described vehicle and stopped it on a commercial premises on County Road 2. Police said they were then led into an impaired operation investigation where the accused was arrested and transported to a local detachment for further testing.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 72-year-old Quinte West resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
None of the charges listed in the above incidents have been proven in court.
In the impaired driving arrests, the accused also had their licences suspended for 90 days and vehicles impounded for seven days.
