The St. Mark’s Heritage Foundation is a non-denominational organization dedicated to the upkeep of the historic 200-year-old church building.
They’re inviting friends and neighbors in Port Hope and the surrounding area to participate in a “Community Group Photo.” This event will take place in front of the beautiful St. Mark’s Church on Sunday, June 9, starting at 11:30 a.m.
St Mark’s Heritage Foundation board member Blake Holton tells us more about their organization.
The event will be held on the historic church lawn at 51 King Street, Port Hope. Renowned photographer Christopher Creighton will be capturing the moment using his antique large format camera. Before the photo shoot, complimentary coffee, tea, and desserts will be served on the side lawn of the church, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for all attendees.
Foundation board chair Gord Thompson told us about the origins of the foundation.
Participants can purchase copies of the community photo for $25 each, with all proceeds going towards the upkeep and restoration of the historic church building. Additionally, local artist Paul Bailey has generously donated a stunning oil painting of St. Mark’s, which will be raffled off during the event.
Holton tells us more about the work of the foundation.
St. Mark’s Church, the oldest church building still in active use in the Diocese of Toronto, boasts a long and fascinating history. Although the area was settled in 1793, the first Anglican service was recorded in 1813. Much detailed information about the church and its parishioners exists, offering a rich tapestry of stories and historical insights. Anyone interested in additional information, family history inquiries, or those with stories and information about St. Mark’s to share are encouraged to write or email the church.
According to Holton, the event is as much about raising awareness as it is about raising funds.
This community event is a wonderful opportunity to come together, celebrate the history of St. Mark’s, and support the preservation of this historic landmark. For more details, please contact Blake Holton at holtontheflorist@gmail.com.
