Warkworth Institution remains in lockdown as of Thursday, Aug. 1 to enable staff to conduct an “exceptional search.”
The lockdown was initiated Wednesday, July 31 at the medium-security federal institution.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said the lockdown was put in place to enable staff to conduct the search, and that the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, staff and inmates.
On Thursday, a CSC spokesperson confirmed the lockdown remained in place, and that further communication will be issued when the lockdown is lifted.
Visits have been suspended until the search is completed. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so, reads a recent release.
CSC said it remains committed to preventing the entry of unauthorized items into its institutions.
Work also continues in partnership with police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into institutions, reiterated officials.
No other details have been released.
