A lockdown put in place over a week ago at Warkworth Institution ended Wednesday, Aug. 7.
As previously reported, the lockdown was put in place to enable an “exceptional search,” with Correctional Service Canada (CSC) saying the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, staff and inmates.
On Wednesday, officials confirmed the search was completed, and normal operations and visits had resumed.
During the search, CSC said contraband and unauthorized items were found, including drugs, drug paraphernalia, “handmade stabbing weapons,” tattoo paraphernalia, and cellphones and accessories.
In this report, an institutional value of the seized items wasn’t provided.
The previously reported seizure – with an institutional value of more than $66,000 in tobacco and marijuana – after a suspected drone drop around the same time as notice of the lockdown was unrelated, officials said earlier.
Correctional Service Canada said it has strengthened measures to prevent the entry of contraband into its institutions, echoing that staff also continue to work in partnership with police to act against those who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional facilities.
No other details have been released.
