Following a heartfelt tribute to John Smylie, the ER expansion at Trenton Memorial Hospital (TMH) is getting a significant boost.
The Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation has announced the John Smylie Memorial Golf Classic raised more than $106,000 in support of the multi-million-dollar emergency room expansion at the hospital.
“We are so thankful for the ongoing support from the community and our sponsors,” said Lindsay Butcher Dodd, interim executive director at TMHF. “The funds raised will go a long way toward providing essential equipment for our ER expansion, which benefits everyone in the community.”
The tourney, presented by Smylie’s Your Independent Grocer, was held at the Oak Hills Golf Club after being rescheduled earlier this year due to remnants of a tropical storm in August. Hailed as a tremendous success, the event brought together some 220 golfers and more than 50 volunteers.
“It served as a heartfelt tribute to John Smylie, celebrating his legacy of community service,” said the foundation team, while sharing news of the total raised and while thanking sponsors, participants, volunteers and Oak Hills Golf Course.
Event chair Christina Charbonneau echoed how the team is grateful for the community’s support, and all involved in the tournament, including a dedicated organizing committee. Charbonneau will also serve as committee chair again next year.
Among one of the highlights of the event was a hole-in-one victory on Glen 8, sponsored by Lisa Thompson RBC Wealth Management, where Steve O’Connell won $10,000, noted the foundation.
John’s family, including Jess and Ian Smylie, said they were thrilled to be part of the tournament as a title sponsor – and were “floored” by the results.
“We really want to thank all the amazing volunteers, members of the board and the foundation staff. It is surprising how much Quinte West citizens are willing to do for the community. We are so happy to be a part of this.”
The 2025 golf classic is already scheduled to return on Aug. 8 to again help rally the community in support of making a lasting impact on local healthcare.

About 6,000 square feet of renovations and an additional 1,000 square feet are proposed as part of the ER expansion.
