A 24-year-old driver from Laval, Quebec, was arrested by Northumberland OPP on October 28, 2024, after violating traffic laws near an emergency response site on Highway 401.
Around 3:45 a.m., OPP officers were assisting with lane closures following a collision in the Township of Hamilton when they noticed a vehicle enter one of the two closed lanes, passing fire, EMS, and tow truck personnel who had flashing lights activated. The driver then returned to the single open lane after overtaking another vehicle.
When officers signalled the driver to pull over, the driver and passenger attempted to switch seats. Upon further investigation, police found the driver was breaching bail conditions. The 24-year-old was subsequently arrested and charged with obstructing a peace officer, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and failing to slow down and proceed cautiously near emergency vehicles.
The OPP urges drivers to remain vigilant around emergency responders and follow all traffic laws to ensure public safety.
