The flags at Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) have been lowered to half-mast in honour of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, who passed away on November 4, 2024, at the age of 73.
Sinclair, an Anishinaabe member of the Peguis First Nation, left a profound legacy dedicated to Indigenous justice and reconciliation through his roles in law and public service.
Sinclair, the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and the second appointed in Canada, served as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Under his leadership, the TRC documented the experiences of residential school survivors, revealing the intergenerational trauma endured by Indigenous communities and advocating for justice and healing. The TRC’s 94 Calls to Action, published under Sinclair’s guidance, remain central to Canada’s reconciliation efforts.
NHH follows the Federal Government’s flag etiquette guidelines and will keep its flags at half-mast until sunset on the day of Sinclair’s memorial service, paying tribute to his enduring contributions to Canada and Indigenous communities.
