There’s a lot of planning and preparation in hosting a major curling event and for the 2025 Ontario Men’s and Women’s Provincial Curling Championships, running now through to Jan. 26, its taken a team of nearly 200 to get the job done.
Organized by the West Northumberland Curling Club, the championship will showcase teams from across the province vying for the chance to represent Ontario on the national stage.
Volunteers will be helping out in a variety of roles; acting as ticket takers, ushers, bartenders, ice specialists, security and more.
Organizing committee member Ian Hartford tells us more.
Hartford says they even have a dedicated group of volunteers to take care of the volunteers themselves, ensuring that all their duties are covered.
The West Northumberland Curling Club was approached about eight months ago by Curling Ontario to host this year’s championships after the original host community pulled out. In 2017, they had nearly twice the amount of time to prepare, and according to Hartford, the community really has come together to make it happen.
We asked Hartford if volunteering for the event might lead to people wanting to learn more about the sport or even joining the club.
Tickets for the 2025 championships, including wheelchair-accessible options, are available at West Northumberland Curling Club – Home, Ontario Curling Championships, Jan 19 – 26, 2025, in Cobourg, ON or by contacting the ExperienceCobourg box office at 855-372-2210.
