Prince Edward County has called off its significant weather event declaration.
The declaration was issued on the night of Monday, Jan. 20 as Environment Canada had issued a snow squall warning for the region, initially saying for up to 40 centimetres of snow was possible by Wednesday.
While a snow squall warning – along with an extreme cold warning – remained in effect Tuesday afternoon, officials are now saying heavy lake-effect snow, with additional accumulations of 15 to 25 cm are possible. The southern portion of the county is anticipated to see the most snow.
In an update Tuesday afternoon, the county said it now believes the weather has subsided enough to meet winter maintenance objectives, and as a result, has called off the declaration.
County officials said crews will continue to work to clear roads and make them safe for travelling over the next several days.
Motorists are being asked to give snowplows lots of space as they work.
And while the declaration has ended, people are still being urged to postpone non-essential travel and to use caution if hitting the road. Reduced visibility is anticipated in heavy and blowing snow.
