8 Wing/CFB Trenton will be conducting a flypast this Saturday in honour of retired Maj. Robert ‘Bob’ Doan, who passed away earlier in January in his 100th year.
The flypast will be conducted by a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CC-130J Hercules from the 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton this Saturday, Feb. 1 during the funeral service for Doan. The flypast will take place over the Weaver Family Funeral Home (29 Bay St., Trenton) at about 12:30 p.m., 8 Wing has confirmed.
“Doan served in the RCAF in many parts of the world,” said 8 Wing/Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, in a recent release. “He was also very involved in his community as a member of (the) Royal Canadian Legion, Air Force Association, (and) past president of both the Air Force Wing 415 of Canada and FSNA Trenton, in addition to spending many years with the Canadian Air Force Cadet program.”
In his obituary, it states Doan passed away at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital on Jan. 23, 2025, in his 100th year.
“He was also involved with the National Air Force Museum of Canada and (a) member of the Trenton Curling Club,” reads his obituary. “His legacy will be ever remembered by his family and friends.”
The legion and memorial service is being held at the Weaver Family Funeral Home Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by a reception for family and friends. His obituary also states in remembrance, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the air force museum in Trenton are appreciated by family.
CFB said the aircraft will fly at an altitude no lower than 500 feet above the highest obstacle on their route. Flypasts continue to be meticulously planned out and closely controlled for public safety – they’re also dependent on weather and flying conditions, reiterated officials.
“Through flypasts such as this, the Royal Canadian Air Force is proud to honour veterans like Maj. Doan, and their dedicated and courageous service to Canada,” added 8 Wing.
Memories and condolences can be shared online via the Weaver Funeral Homes website.
The CC-130J Hercules is described as a four-engine, fixed-wing turboprop aircraft that is used for a wide range of missions, including personnel transport, search-and-rescue, tactical airlift, and aircrew training.
