After another dumping of snow Thursday morning – and on-and-off snow and freezing rain still possible in coming hours – Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the eastern Northumberland, Quinte West and Belleville region.
Environment Canada says “strong winds gusting up to 80 km/h” are expected this evening and tonight (Thursday, Feb. 6.)
Environment Canada has also issued the same alert for western Northumberland County – from Cobourg to Colborne.
“Strong southwesterly winds will shift to strong northwesterly winds tonight in the wake of a strong cold front,” explained officials, noting loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.
Residents are encouraged to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts. There is also a risk of blowing snow and snow squalls overnight.
Meanwhile, Northumberland OPP also issued a snow advisory this morning, saying the snowfall is reducing visibility and making for hazardous driving across Northumberland.
If travel isn’t essential, officials suggest people stay home and avoid unnecessary risks. If you have to drive, police urge motorists to slow down and drive to the conditions, increase following distance between vehicles, and ensure full light systems are on.
