Two people previously unaccounted for during a mobile home fire Thursday (March 13) in Quinte West are dead.
Fire Chief John Whelan tells us the blaze was well underway when first-responders arrived at Bayview Estates.
Whelan says his people did the best they could going into the inferno a couple of times and the fire only intensified forcing them to retreat.
Whelan says at the height of the blaze, firefighters had to turn their efforts to preventing the flames from spreading.
Preliminary findings indicate a grease fire was the initial source of the blaze. Whelan says they are also looking into whether the mobile home had working smoke detectors.
Because fatalities are involved, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has joined the investigation, which Whelan says will include forensic analysis.
