In response to the March 29-30 ice storm that hit southern Ontario, Northumberland County is introducing temporary waste disposal measures to assist with storm-related clean-up.
From now until May 2, residents can apply for a Tipping Fee Rebate to help cover the cost of disposing storm debris at Community Recycling Centres (CRCs). Eligible residents must submit a Redemption Request Form along with weigh scale receipts at Northumberland.ca/Garbage. Additionally, leaf and yard waste under 500 kg can be disposed of at CRCs free of charge.
Garbage collection limits are also being temporarily increased until April 17, allowing four bags per household instead of two. Each bag must still meet the 20 kg weight limit and require a waste tag.
Leaf and Yard Waste collection is also set to begin in Area 1 next week, with the County reminding residents to follow curbside guidelines:
Only grass clippings, branches, twigs, leaves, and plant material (with soil removed) will be accepted.
Brush must be tied in bundles, no longer than one metre (three feet), with branches no larger than five cm (two inches) in diameter.
Each bag or bundle must weigh no more than 20 kg (40 lbs).
