You can kick unwanted items to the curb again starting in May or search for new-to-you treasures and help reduce waste with the return of the popular spring Giveaway Days initiative in Quinte West and Belleville.
The initiative will make its spring curbside return on May 3 and 4 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“I encourage everyone to take part in this year’s curbside Giveaway Days,” says Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison. “This event is a great opportunity for our community to come together, give new life to unwanted items and keep reusable goods out of our landfills.”
How does it work? Residents tackling spring cleanup and wanting to easily do away with unwanted household items in good conditions simply put those items out to the curb for others to take – or those hunting for new treasures can pick up what they want.
However, organizers say items should be clearly labelled that they are free.
Printable “free” signs can be found on both cities’ Giveaway Days webpages for participants to use. Items should be put at the curbside by 8 a.m. and anything not picked up taken back inside by 8 p.m.
What can people kick to the curb? Organizers say appropriate items include DVDs, books, furniture, small appliances, kitchen items and construction materials, such as hardware, lumber and drywall.
Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Directorate advises against giving away cribs, car seats, strollers, bath seats and playpens to avoid unsafe use, note officials.
“We are excited that Giveaway Days are back again this spring,” says Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis. “This event is always a favourite in the community.
“It’s a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning, pass along your unused items for others to enjoy and it helps divert waste from our landfills.”
